Generation Alpha, the generation born from 2010 until 2024, is rapidly emerging as a powerful force for activism and social change. They are growing up in a world where Generation Z (born approximately between 1995 and 2009) is already influencing culture, technology, and social movements.

Generation Alpha, born from 2010 til 2024, is emerging as a generation deeply embedded in activism and social change. This cohort is the first truly digitally native generation. They grew up with advanced technology and constant internet access from a very young age. 1

Gen Alpha, often called the ‘young activist’ generation, frequently joins marches and protests, especially for climate change and political events like Brexit. 2 Their Millennial parents, motivated to be great parents and friends, encourage them to openly discuss social issues. This greatly fuels their spirit for early activism. 3

The Impact of Social Issues on Gen Alpha

Social issues have a profound impact on Gen Alpha, shaping their worldview and daily interactions. This generation is growing up in a time where environmental concerns are at the forefront, with climate change being a defining issue for their future.  4

Gen Alpha looks up to Gen Z, who prioritize climate change. 5 Their awareness and concern for social issues extend beyond the environment. Gen Alpha understands equality and justice well, and many believe everyone should be treated equally.

This generation is also more likely to be critical, ethical, and conscious consumers, pushing back against unsustainable practices like fast fashion. 6

Despite their strong inclination towards activism, Gen Alpha faces several challenges. The digital environment they are growing up in has led to shorter attention spans and potential mental health issues. 

The constant exposure to screens and social media can result in content fatigue and a decrease in interest in traditional news sources. 

However, these challenges also present opportunities. Gen Alpha’s tech-savviness and adaptability make them well-equipped to leverage digital platforms for activism and social change. 7

Their ability to navigate different social media platforms allows them to spread awareness and mobilize support for various causes effectively.

The Intersection of Alpha Activism and Education

Education plays a crucial role in shaping Gen Alpha’s activism. Gen Alpha’s education is likely to be highly digital and personalized, with advanced technology used to engage students more effectively.

This digital integration can provide Gen Alpha with the tools and knowledge to address social issues innovatively. Moreover, the emphasis on social issues within educational curricula can further enhance their activism.

Schools and educators are increasingly incorporating topics like environmental sustainability and social justice into their teaching, fostering a generation that is not only aware of these issues but also equipped to take action. 8

Global vs. Local Activism

Gen Alpha’s activism combines global and local perspectives. They grew up in a connected world and are more globally aware.  9

This global perspective is complemented by a strong sense of local activism, where they engage in community-based initiatives and push for changes within their immediate environment.

The balance between global and local activism allows Gen Alpha to address issues on multiple fronts, from participating in global climate strikes to advocating for local environmental policies. Influence of Gen Z on Gen Alpha

Gen Z, known for its strong sense of social justice and activism, has significantly influenced Gen Alpha. Its involvement in movements like #blacklivesmatter and #metoo has shown Generation Alpha the power of social media to bring about social change. 11

Gen Alpha is likely to inherit many of these values from their socially conscious Gen Z siblings and parents who are increasingly aware of global issues.

Some popular examples:

• A popular example of Gen z influence is through Greta Thunberg, a climate activist who started the global “Fridays for Future” movement, has inspired millions, including the younger Alpha generation, to care about environmental issues.

• Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, has become a global symbol for girls’ rights, inspiring both Gen Z and Alpha to advocate for equal opportunities.
• Amika George, a British activist, founded the #FreePeriods campaign at the age of 17, which led to a successful movement for free menstrual products in schools. Her activism highlights how a single person can create global change.
• Mari Copeny (also known as Little Miss Flint), who at a young age became a voice for the people of Flint, Michigan, during the water crisis, exemplifies how young people can champion local and global issues related to sustainability and justice.
• Emma González, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, became a prominent gun control activist, co-founding the advocacy group “Never Again MSD.” Her efforts demonstrate how Gen Z can turn personal experiences into widespread movements.

Gen Alpha shows potential to become a generation of activists and change-makers. Their digital fluency, awareness of social issues, and innovative approach to education and activism position them to tackle the challenges of their time effectively. As they continue to grow and develop, their impact on society and the world will undoubtedly be profound.
